White Heat: S1 Ep6 - The Sea of Trees

On TV: Thursday 12th April 2012
Channel: BBC Two 9pm
Episode Type: 6/6
In 1 Sentence: The perfect ending to what has been a fantastic series that I am sad to see go...
BBC Summary: It's 1990 and the flat is for sale; Orla organises one last reunion for the flatmates. A brutal revelation has cataclysmic consequences. Back in the present, the last surviving flatmate arrives and the identity of the deceased flatmate is finally revealed.

My Review: There have been a few detours but the final episode was back on track as we said farewell to the gang and finally find the answers to those lingering questions.
And what a send off it was as we went back to 1990 to catch up with their lives for the last time. Charlotte and Victor are finally happy with daughter Emma, however not for long as we find out the reason behind the bad feelings between Lilly and Charlotte.
And what a drama that was!
Everything was right on the mark and there were some beautifully poignant moments not least in the present day when the last of the friends arrive and we find out who died. The fact that they had drifted apart and abandoned Orla when they were her only family was absolutely heartbreaking and I’m not ashamed to say brought tears to my eyes.
It’s incredible how spot on the present day actors were for the characters and every single actor involved has been stunning in one way or another. My favourites, however, have to be Claire Foy, Sam Claflin and Tamsin Greig. The ups and downs their characters went through were extraordinary but they kept them grounded and real and were the highlights of the programme.
Not only was the acting extraordinary throughout but the cinematography and directing was just mesmerising. White Heat was a work of art and I’m sad to see it go. I think it has been underrated in the press and that it fully deserves all the praise it gets. It may have been slow in places but it was definitely worth the wait!
Score: 9/10
