The Oscars 2011: Winners

There weren't too many surprises last night at the 83rd Academy Awards. As you can see below, The King’s Speech was the talk of the night with a few little shocks here and there.

For me the BAFTAs were much more exciting - partly due to the fact I could actually watch them due to being in Britain!
It was a disappointing night for many films nominated, including True Grit, The Kids Are All Right, Winter’s Bone and 127 Hours, who altogether picked up no awards. Between them they notched up 10 nominations - making them the biggest Oscar losers since the 1985 Oscars.

Let’s look back at the night’s winners and highlights...

This is one of my favourite Elmify videos, where she visits New York.
It is a mix of the fantastic 'Thoughts from Places' series the Vlogbrothers do so well and Elmify's brilliant quirky charm.

The Brits 2011 Winners

Another spectacular night was had last night, as the Brits were broadcast live from the O2 Arena in London. It was hosted by James Corden, who for his first time hosting on his own, did really well.
This year was one of the best yet with some amazing performances, specifically Plan B performing alongside a full-scale fight with riot police (borrowed from Take That's opening performance?!), ending with a policeman on fire!
Other stand out performances were Adele, Rihanna and Tinie Tempah - who came away with 2 awards.

Here is my take on the night, featuring the winners and a look back at my predictions...

New One Day Poster

The new One Day poster was released today, a film I am very excited about!

Looking quite a lot like a fashion advert, it depicts the film's stars - Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, playing Emma and Dexter respectively. Directed by An Education's Lone Scherfig, One Day is released on the 30th of September.

Here are the currently released film stills of the film...

One Day is part of My Top 30 Most Anticipated Films of 2011 and you can see my post about it here.

The BAFTAs 2011 Winners

Well, what an incredible night! Once again the BAFTAs were held from the Royal Opera House in London, where it has been held since 2008.

There were many memorable moments, including Helena Bonham Carter’s hefty speech and Rosamund Pike (in a beautiful Alexander McQueen dress) almost announcing the winner of Original Screenplay prematurely.

Obviously the big winners of the night were The King’s Speech - no surprise there! But who else got an award and was it what we were expecting?
Let's have a look at the winners as we relive the night’s awards...

My Top 30 Most Anticipated Films of 2011: Part 6

From R-W...
Red Riding Hood

UK release date: 15th April 2011
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Romance

IMDb summary: Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family's displeasure.

Amanda Seyfried stars as the lead, in this new vision of the centuries old fairytale. The trailer looks thrilling, dark and beautiful - whose to say the film won’t be the same? From the director of Twilight, arguably the best of all the films from the franchise: lets hope that doesn’t put anyone off. Appealing to both genders, this has the potential to be the perfect spring movie to get us geared up for the Summer blockbusters. If it’s half as good as the hype, that is.

Sherlock Holmes 2
UK release date: 16th December 2011
Genre: Action, Mystery
IMDb summary: Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty.

No Trailer Released Yet.

The first Sherlock Holmes was a hit; at least in the sense that they decided to do a sequel. I hope it lives up to the first’s british charm and that it doesn’t become too forced, like so many sequels are. But perhaps a good thing about this particular sequel is that the film won't have to ‘set up’ many of the characters and their relationships. It can (theoretically) jump straight in to the action - where it works best.Realistically it’s been two years so they’ll have to do a few re-introductions for the audience that missed it the first time around, which could easily drag the movie down.
Mixing slap-stick humour with some dark themes, SH2 could do just as well, if not better, than the first one. We’ll just have to wait and see...

My Top 30 Most Anticipated Films of 2011: Part 5

From N-R...

Never Let Me Go
UK release date: 11th February 2011

Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi, Romance
IMDb summary: As children, Ruth, Kathy and Tommy, spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.
This film is without a doubt, my most anticipated film of the year.
Since reading the book by Kazuo Ishiguro over the summer I completely fell for the story, the characters, the writing: the whole book.
And once I found out Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield were involved i was ecstatic as I knew this beloved book was in extra special hands.
Like everyone, in October, I saw The Social Network and was blown away by it, especially Andrew Garfield so I’m very pleased that he stars as Tommy, who is such an interesting character; as are all 3 of the stars.
Anyone who hasn’t read the book, i urge you to as it is truly one of those one-off, take-your-breath-away books.
And I urge you even more so to watch the film, I just hope it lives up to my expectations!
(I’ll be watching the film soon, so look out for the review!)

One Day
UK release date: 30th September 2011
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Drama
Plot Summary: One Day charts an extraordinary relationship.
Emma and Dexter meet on the night of their college graduation – July 15th, 1988. She is a working-class girl of principle and ambition who dreams of making the world a better place. He is a wealthy charmer who dreams that the world will be his playground.
For the next two decades, every July 15th reveals to us how Em and Dex are faring, as their friendship ebbs and flows with the passing of the years. Through laughter and romance, heartbreak and exhilaration, they experience the grandeur of life. Somewhere along their journey, these two people realise that what they are searching and hoping for has been there for them all along.

Trailer Not Yet Released.

Wow, another of my favourite books being adapted into a film, I really do hope I’m not too disappointed by them both!
One Day was an incredible book so I expect no less of the film. Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess star as Emma and Dexter who we visit, each day, over the course of about 20 years. The funny, clever and touching book will hopefully translate to an equally beautiful film, which I absolutely cannot wait to see.

See my review of the book here.
